As we at INDAM commemorate Founder's Day, we honour Dr. Manmohan Attavar, whose vision transformed not only INDAM but the landscape of India’s seed industry. His commitment, scientific expertise, and global perspective laid the groundwork for sustainable, high-yielding crops, impacting countless farmers and reshaping Indian agri-horticulture.
Dr.Attavar’s passion for agriculture guided him through rigorous academic and practical training. After completing his M.Sc. in Agriculture from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, in 1961, he pursued advanced studies in Plant Breeding and Genetics at Montana State University, USA, and in Ornamental Horticulture at Dupage Horticultural School in Illinois. Here, he trained with industry leaders like George J. Ball, Inc., gaining hands-on experience that would shape his mission to bring technology of producing hybrid seeds to India.
Upon his return to India in 1965, Dr.Attavar met Dr. M.H. Marigowda, Director of Horticulture in Bangalore. With a meticulously crafted project report in hand, he presented his vision for hybrid seed production as a visionary determined to transform agriculture. Impressed, Dr.Marigowda granted him permission to start his work at the Lalbagh greenhouse. Just two years later, Dr.Attavar achieved a historic milestone by exporting India’s first batch of hybrid Petunia seeds to the United States, establishing India’s presence in the global seed industry.
Dr.Attavar’s contributions went beyond exports; he integrated social responsibility, environmental concerns, and ethical practices into every facet of INDAM. His commitment to empowering farmers and also skill development among rural women, promoting eco-friendly practices, and fostering a resilient ecosystem became hallmarks of his legacy. Under his guidance, INDAM grew to be synonymous not only with high-quality seeds but also with community support and environmental care.
Dr.Attavar’s vision continues to inspire generations of agri- horticulturists and scientists. His pioneering spirit set a foundation for INDAM to thrive as a leader in Indian agriculture, pushing the boundaries of innovation. He believed in collaboration, seeing potential where others saw challenges. His life’s work is a testament to the profound impact one visionary can have on an industry.
As we celebrate Founder's Day, we remember Dr. Manmohan Attavar not only for what he built but for the values he instilled in INDAM and the broader agricultural community. His journey reminds us that with passion, perseverance, and a steadfast commitment to principles, even the most ambitious dreams can flourish. Today, we carry forward his legacy, inspired by his vision to sow the seeds of innovation, sustainability, and collective prosperity for generations to come.
